A Path to Sports Medicine

— Ilya, can you tell us about your journey in sports medicine? What inspired you to choose this field?

My journey began when I worked as a fitness coach, training women for fitness bikini competitions. During preparation, I often encountered various issues, such as knee and back pain. These challenges led me to explore manual therapy. Successfully helping a client recover from a severe spinal injury opened new horizons for me, and I received an invitation to join the clinic where I now work.

Approaches to Recovery

— What manual and therapeutic methods do you consider most effective for athlete rehabilitation?

Effectiveness depends on an individual approach to each patient. We start with:

  • comprehensive medical history
  • detailed physical assessment
  • special attention to joint mobility

Based on this, we design a personalized program to restore movement and strengthen muscles.

Minimal Use of Medication

— Your work focuses on minimal medication. What challenges does this approach present?

The main challenge is explaining to clients that many issues can be resolved without pills. People often hope for a “magic cure,” but real recovery comes from their own effort. We use mobilization techniques and manual therapy to restore joint motion, emphasizing to patients that their active participation is essential.

Memorable Cases

— What was your most memorable experience working with athletes?

One of the most remarkable cases was helping a champion powerlifter recover after a major pectoral muscle rupture. Despite the seriousness of the injury and subsequent surgery, the athlete showed incredible determination. Just 14 weeks after surgery, he set a new Russian record—proof of the importance of proper rehabilitation.

Working with Football Goalkeepers

— Was working with football goalkeepers particularly challenging? Are there specifics to their training or recovery?

Goalkeeper rehabilitation requires a deep understanding of the sport’s specifics. Preventing injury and correcting imbalances are key priorities. It’s important not to overload them so that physical preparation supports, rather than hinders, their athletic performance.
