At RuNoFest 2026, as part of an interview for MosFocus magazine, a conversation took place with historical costume designer Galina Makarenko, founder of the MGAL brand and the project “Authentic Rus”.
During the discussion, the designer presented her new collection, “The History of Thread: Shuya Patterns”. According to her, the choice of theme was no accident — the Shuya manufactory is a truly Russian enterprise, closely linked to traditional patterns, and reviving these traditions has become the mission of her generation.
Special attention in the interview was given to Galina Makarenko’s unique life journey. It turned out that she is an aircraft engine designer from the Isaev Design Bureau, a representative of a technical dynasty in the third generation. The designer spoke about her special tradition: she draws an angel, adding new details to it after each achieved success.
The conversation also touched upon the symbolism of Russian culture. Galina noted that every traditional element of clothing — whether it be a kokoshnik, a crown, or a kichka — always features a plant motif. In her opinion, this is a key feature of ancient Russian creativity.
The interview revealed the multifaceted nature of Galina Makarenko’s personality and her profound understanding of both technical and creative aspects of working with historical costume.
